My compositional experience began before completing my bachelor of Music Performance degree. As a winner of the ‘A.B.C Young Composer’s Award’ in 1995, my orchestral score The Faun was performed by the Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmanian, Adelaide and West Australian Symphony Orchestras between 1995 to 1998. In 1995, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra conducted by Roger Smalley performed Spectral Light. Two years later the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Porcelijn gave the premiere performance of Fire and Ice as part of the Australian Composers Orchestral Forum.
Structures for orchestra was the end result of a second commission, for an art film by Future Films and Glen Eaves. The work was recorded by the West Australian Youth Orchestra, which I conducted. The score won the ‘Young Composers Film Award’ in 1999. My Piano Sonata No 2 ‘Cobalt’ was performed also that year by Michael Kieran Harvey in August, at the Calloway Auditorium, University of West Australia.
1999 brought about another commission for ballet, this time from the Australian Ballet. A full-length ballet of 86 minutes in length, Mirror, Mirror opened in Melbourne at the State Theatre, Victorian Arts Centre. Mark Summerbell and Dobbs Frank between them gave 22 performances of the work. The second and third seasons of the ballet were situated in Brisbane and Sydney, the last of which gave rise to performances at the Sydney Opera House in December 2000. Tasks for both ballet commissions included the writing of the orchestral score, piano reduction and orchestral parts. During 2000, I was composer-in-residence at the Peggy Glanville-Hicks estate in Paddington, Sydney as part of the Peggy Glanville-Hicks Fellowship for Australian Composers.
I was a represented composer at the Australian Music Centre until 2004. During my time at Edith Cowan University, I studied composition with Brian Howard. I studied with Roger Smalley as part of a Masters degree at the University of Western Australia, but I was unable to complete the degree due to my second commission and my acceptance for the Peggy Glanville-Hicks fellowship. In 2004, I received my last commission, Kaleidoscope, a work performed for the Ensemble Archangelo with funding from an APRA grant.
